documentary 10/28
the whereabouts of anxiety , 불안의 행방

… the Rose will always Bloom
a video by Maria Korporal

In this fourth and last video of the project Korporal Labyrinth, the artist performs a ritual on the beach of Hoek van Holland, the place where the waters of the large river area, where she and her mother were born and grew up, flow into the sea. The artist tears the petals out of a big rose – a rose that will revive in the following scenes, out of a rosebud nipple via a labyrinth of light into a Rose of Jericho, which blooms again and transforms itself into a leaf. A leaf which has been found by the artist's brother, two weeks after the death of their mother, with her initials R S (Rinie Slieker) incised by an insect. While the artist whispers the bible text about love from 1 Corinthians 13, a text her mother read to her when she was young, the lines on the leaf are filled with blood and the words popping up in her mind are written down.

starring: Astrid Astra Indricane and Maria (Felix) Korporal
locations: the beach of Hoek van Holland, the artist's studio and the regions of her mind

Korporal Labyrinth is an account of a visceral journey in different stadia, expressed in four short videos. The artist’s drawing of the labyrinth was the starting point for the project, together with a bunch of footage taken mainly from July to October 2013. This is a very important period in the artist’s life, in which two women play the lead role: her mother Ariena (“Rinie”) and her new lover Astrid – a life which has come to an end, and a life which has taken a new start.
In her Korporal Labyrinth, the artist explores several ways of walking through the labyrinth – there is no absolute truth, every possibility is worth trying and leads to new experiences and points of view.

"853" is my submission #1 for One Day On Earth's latest project: Your Day. Your City. Your Future: San Francisco.

UPDATE (May 2nd, 2014): I am very pleased, honored, and humbled to learn that this video earned an Honorable Mention in the Vimeo Weekend Challenge for April 26th, 2014.

The number 853 connects me to this building, The Transamerica Pyramid aka the "pointy" building which stands at 853 feet tall (official height) at 600 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, California. 853 was also the address of the house I grew up in a small town on the prairie of Northern Illinois.

When I was a teenager, my oldest brother Richard was working as an architect for William L. Pereira & Associates in Los Angeles who at that time were in the design phase of this building. I have a hunch that the number 853 is not a coincidence.

This edit was "Created for the Weekend Challenge: vimeo.com/groups/weekendchallenge" as well as the One Day On Earth, "Your Day. Your City. Your Future." project.

This is a small portion of the clips I took on Saturday afternoon, April 26th, 2014 but represent my focus on the obscure details that define San Francisco. I plan to submit more material in the coming days.

"Exquisite psych-prog for the masses" - Prog Magazine

This song is so beautiful you want to listen to it with very good headphones, or speakers. Same for the visual. It wants you to make it full screen !

From "A Score Without a FIlm"

Filmmakers, behold! Consider this collection as an offering.

The title says it all, this is A Score Without a Film. I found myself creating these mood-based, orchestral tracks and decided that the best way to utilize them would be to give them away for free.

The videos you’ll find here were formed from footage I collected while I traveled around and wrote this album. I’ve created videos to compliment these pieces because the songs seem to warrant a visual counterpart, but I’m no filmmaker. So if you find yourself reading this and are in a position to benefit from using this material, please, use it as fuel for your creative fires.

CINDY JACKSON : NOT QUITE SALVATION

Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Music by The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

(Not Quite) Salvation explores the various ways redemption and meaning are sought in society. What we worship indicates how we hope to be saved from our suffering. What we yearn for are outward symbols of our inward search. As you turn and enter the gallery you are instantly surrounded and dwarfed by a tunnel of twelve-foot figures. Kneeling in rapt surrender, the figures’ hands reach up, creating an imaginary gothic arch above the viewer. Their physicality is raw andemotional, but they are surfaced with the emblems of their worship: one figure is completely tattooed, seeking transcendence using the urban poetry of his skin as a canvas; another figure is covered in dollar bills. All of the kneeling men are reaching, searching, seeking… and the things being sought are narcissistic, monetary, and of this world. On the floor in front of the window another one of these figures lays prostrate- the fallen god of war. Passing through this ante-chamber of figures, you approach a small room framed with the same upward gothic-shaped wall. On either side of this arch are two smaller male figures with arms outstretched as if flying or crucified, falling head firstout of the sky. Inside the small room is a sculpture titled “Always Wanting/ Never Enough.” A larger than life man and woman, in the throes of emotional distress, obviously together but suffering individually, without each the other’s comfort. They are vibrant and muscular, the physicality of their bodies aching with passion and intensity. Completely covered with Louis Vuitton and Gucci logos, this couple is a powerful symbol of emotional entanglement, as well as the literal embodiment of consumerism and superficial pleasure/desire. This inner sanctum provides the sacristy of the installation, the holy place where our inner and outer contradictions are given front and center stage.

"Les briques Lego constituent un ensemble d’éléments modulaires", source wikipedia. Ou comme chante Bashung : «C’est un grand terrain de nulle part / Avec de belles poignées d’argent, La lunette d’un microscope / Et tous ces petits êtres qui courent. 3'30"
Single channel video

In our high-tech world, unpredictable behaviour from technology is often perceived as negative. These glitches however, a.k.a. 'the ghost in the machine', can be a starting point to expand the possibilities of image production in the digital age. For this video, I used a technique called 'datamoshing', in which digital video images deliberately are made unstable by removing keyframes. The result is that the movement from video B is translated into the image of video A, so that this image becomes radically transformed. In this work, I use found footage in different formats (digital HD, VHS, Super 8, ...) literally as "paint", smearing images to create painterly, abstract, dreamlike landscapes. By deliberately adding glitches, the digital image becomes unstable and a new means of expression, making it possible to add painterly qualities to video, thus mixing characteristics of contemporary and age-old media.
